This is my interpretation of the song STOP AND STARE
Speaker: I think the speaker is someone who lives in a small town and wants to make a change but doesn’t know how to do so
Tone: This is a slow, sad song. (Because he is saying he keeps trying to make a change but doesn’t succeed)
Theme: The theme is about how everyone is in a rut, doing the same old thing over and over again. And how that needs to change to make a difference.
Significance of the title: Stop and Stare could mean “Stop and take in the bad things going on around you because it needs to change.
Interpretation:
1. The speaker has decided he needs to make a change (It's time to make our move, I'm shaking off the rust) He sees how long he has not done something (I'm staring down myself, counting up the years) and he is determined (Steady hands, just take the wheel...) It could be because wheel could mean his life and steady hands could mean determination
2. The speaker is saying everyone needs to “stop and stare” and take the world and its problems. He feels like he’s moving and making progress but really he is not making any progress (I think I'm moving but I go nowhere) He looks at how he lives and how people live in 3rd world countries and wonders why he’s here and hot there.(You start to wonder why you're here not there)
3. In this stance he is determind and he gets started but something always goes wrong (Something pulls my focus out -And I'm standing down...)
4. *** note Same thing as Stance number 2 but the last line is different*** He is saying how we always want things to be fair but really things aren’t fair {The way we live compared to how people in 3rd world countries live} (And you'd give anything to get what's fair - But fair ain't what you really need.
5. He keeps failing and finally gives up (But I've become what I can't be) And asks one last time (Oh, do you see what I see... ) which could mean that the things he sees are the problems that need to be changed, so he is asking if everyone elso sees that too.
LYRICS:
1. This town is colder now, I think it's sick of us
It's time to make our move, I'm shaking off the rust
I've got my heart set on anywhere but here
I'm staring down myself, counting up the years
Steady hands, just take the wheel...
And every glance is killing me
Time to make one last appeal... for the life I lead
2. Stop and stare
I think I'm moving but I go nowhere
Yeah I know that everyone gets scared
But I've become what I can't be, oh
Stop and stare
You start to wonder why you're here not there
And you'd give anything to get what's fair
But fair ain't what you really need
Oh, can you see what I see
3. They're trying to come back, all my senses push
Untie the weight bags, I never thought I could...
Steady feet, don't fail me now
Gonna run till you can't walk
Something pulls my focus out
And I'm standing down...
4. Stop and stare
I think I'm moving but I go nowhere
Yeah I know that everyone gets scared
But I've become what I can't be, oh
Stop and stare
You start to wonder why you're here not there
And you'd give anything to get what's fair
But fair ain't what you really need
Oh, you don't need
What you need, what you need...
5. Stop and stare
I think I'm moving but I go nowhere
Yeah I know that everyone gets scared
But I've become what I can't be
Oh, do you see what I see...
